99
Libxml is the XML C library developed for the Gnome project. XML itself
100is a metalanguage to design markup languages, i.e. text language where
101semantic and structure are added to the content using extra "markup"
102information enclosed between angle brackets. HTML is the most well-known
103markup language. Though the library is written in C a
104variety of language bindings make it available in other environments.

105
Libxml2 is known to be very portable, the library should build and work
106without serious troubles on a variety of systems (Linux, Unix, Windows,
107CygWin, MacOS, MacOS X, RISC Os, OS/2, VMS, QNX, MVS, ...)

108
Libxml2 implements a number of existing standards related to markup
109languages:

110

111
the XML standard: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml

141 2001 except the base64Binary and hexBinary types

142

143
In most cases libxml tries to implement the specifications in a relatively
144strictly compliant way. As of release 2.4.16, libxml2 passes all 1800+ tests
145from the OASIS XML Tests
146Suite.

147
To some extent libxml2 provides support for the following additional
148specifications but doesn't claim to implement them completely:

149

150
Document Object Model (DOM) http://www.w3.org/TR/DOM-Level-2-Core/
151 it doesn't implement the API itself, gdome2 does this on top of
152 libxml2

153

154RFC 959 :
155 libxml implements a basic FTP client code

156

157RFC 1945 :
158 HTTP/1.0, again a basic HTTP client code

159
SAX: a minimal SAX implementation compatible with early expat
160 versions

161
DocBook SGML v4: libxml2 includes a hackish parser to transition to
162 XML

163

164
A partial implementation of XML Schemas Part

166conformance statement about it at the moment.
