Introduce a pass to insert vzeroupper instructions to avoid AVX to SSE transition penalty. The pass is enabled through the "x86-use-vzeroupper" llc command line option. This is only the first step (very naive and conservative one) to sketch out the idea, but proper DFA is coming next to allow smarter decisions. - Eliminate MCCodeEmitter's dependency on TargetMachine. Starting to refactor Target to separate out code that's needed to fully describe target machine from those that are only needed by codegen. The goal is to sink the essential target description into MC layer so we can start building MC based tools without needing to link in the entire codegen. First step is to refactor TargetRegisterInfo. This patch added a base class MCRegisterInfo which TargetRegisterInfo is derived from. Fix PR6696 and PR6663 When a frame pointer is not otherwise required, and dynamic stack alignment is necessary solely due to the spilling of a register with larger alignment requirements than the default stack alignment, the frame pointer can be both used as a general purpose register and a frame pointer. That goes poorly, for obvious reasons. This patch brings back a bit of old logic for identifying the use of such registers and conservatively reserves the frame pointer during register allocation in such cases. For now, implement for X86 only since it's 32-bit linux which is hitting this, and we want a targeted fix for 2.7. Add a late SSEDomainFix pass that twiddles SSE instructions to avoid domain crossings. On Nehalem and newer CPUs there is a 2 cycle latency penalty on using a register in a different domain than where it was defined. Some instructions have equvivalents for different domains, like por/orps/orpd. The SSEDomainFix pass tries to minimize the number of domain crossings by changing between equvivalent opcodes where possible. This is a work in progress, in particular the pass doesn't do anything yet. SSE instructions are tagged with their execution domain in TableGen using the last two bits of TSFlags. Note that not all instructions are tagged correctly. Life just isn't that simple. The SSE execution domain issue is very similar to the ARM NEON/VFP pipeline issue handled by NEONMoveFixPass. llvm-mc/X86: Implement single instruction encoding interface for MC. - Note, this is a gigantic hack, with the sole purpose of unblocking further work on the assembler (its also possible to test the mathcer more completely now). - Despite being a hack, its actually good enough to work over all of 403.gcc (although some encodings are probably incorrect). Second attempt: Massive check in. This changes the "-fast" flag to "-O#" in llc. If you want to use the old behavior, the flag is -O0. This change allows for finer-grained control over which optimizations are run at different -O levels. Most of this work was pretty mechanical. The majority of the fixes came from verifying that a "fast" variable wasn't used anymore. The JIT still uses a "Fast" flag. The majority of the fixes came from verifying that a "fast" variable wasn't used anymore. The JIT still uses a "Fast" flag. Completely rearchitect the interface between targets and the pass manager. This pass: 1. Splits TargetMachine into TargetMachine (generic targets, can be implemented any way, like the CBE) and LLVMTargetMachine (subclass of TM that is used by things using libcodegen and other support). 2. Instead of having each target fully populate the passmgr for file or JIT output, move all this to common code, and give targets hooks they can implement. 3. Commonalize the target population stuff between file emission and JIT emission. 4. All (native code) codegen stuff now happens in a FunctionPassManager, which paves the way for "fast -O0" stuff in the CFE later, and now LLC could lazily stream .bc files from disk to use less memory. 5. There are now many fewer #includes and the targets don't depend on the scalar xforms or libanalysis anymore (but codegen does). 6. Changing common code generator pass ordering stuff no longer requires touching all targets. 7. First round of support for doing scalar FP using the SSE2 ISA extension and XMM registers. There are many known deficiencies and fixmes, which will be addressed ASAP. The major benefit of this work is that it will allow the LLVM register allocator to allocate FP registers across basic blocks. The x86 backend will still default to x87 style FP. To enable this work, you must pass -enable-sse-scalar-fp and either -sse2 or -sse3 to llc. Add an option to enable the SSA based peephole optimizer. Eventually this pass will provide substantially better code in the interim between when we have a crappy isel and nice isel. Unfortunately doing so requires fixing the backend to actually SUPPORT all of the fancy addressing modes that we now generate, and writing a DCE pass for machine code.
