netfilter: push reasm skb through instead of original frag skbs Pushing original fragments through causes several problems. For example for matching, frags may not be matched correctly. Take following example: <example> On HOSTA do: ip6tables -I INPUT -p icmpv6 -j DROP ip6tables -I INPUT -p icmpv6 -m icmp6 --icmpv6-type 128 -j ACCEPT and on HOSTB you do: ping6 HOSTA -s2000 (MTU is 1500) Incoming echo requests will be filtered out on HOSTA. This issue does not occur with smaller packets than MTU (where fragmentation does not happen) </example> As was discussed previously, the only correct solution seems to be to use reassembled skb instead of separete frags. Doing this has positive side effects in reducing sk_buff by one pointer (nfct_reasm) and also the reams dances in ipvs and conntrack can be removed. Future plan is to remove net/ipv6/netfilter/nf_conntrack_reasm.c entirely and use code in net/ipv6/reassembly.c instead. ipv6: make lookups simpler and faster TCP listener refactoring, part 4 : To speed up inet lookups, we moved IPv4 addresses from inet to struct sock_common Now is time to do the same for IPv6, because it permits us to have fast lookups for all kind of sockets, including upcoming SYN_RECV. Getting IPv6 addresses in TCP lookups currently requires two extra cache lines, plus a dereference (and memory stall). inet6_sk(sk) does the dereference of inet_sk(__sk)->pinet6 This patch is way bigger than its IPv4 counter part, because for IPv4, we could add aliases (inet_daddr, inet_rcv_saddr), while on IPv6, it's not doable easily. inet6_sk(sk)->daddr becomes sk->sk_v6_daddr inet6_sk(sk)->rcv_saddr becomes sk->sk_v6_rcv_saddr And timewait socket also have tw->tw_v6_daddr & tw->tw_v6_rcv_saddr at the same offset. netfilter: nf_conntrack: make sequence number adjustments usuable without NAT Split out sequence number adjustments from NAT and move them to the conntrack core to make them usable for SYN proxying. The sequence number adjustment information is moved to a seperate extend. The extend is added to new conntracks when a NAT mapping is set up for a connection using a helper. As a side effect, this saves 24 bytes per connection with NAT in the common case that a connection does not have a helper assigned. netfilter: nf_conntrack_ipv6: Plug sk_buff leak in fragment handling In commit 4cdd3408 ("netfilter: nf_conntrack_ipv6: improve fragmentation handling"), an sk_buff leak was introduced when dealing with reassembled packets by grabbing a reference to the original skb instead of the reassembled skb. At this point, the leak only impacted conntracks with an associated helper. In commit 58a317f1 ("netfilter: ipv6: add IPv6 NAT support"), the bug was expanded to include all reassembled packets with unconfirmed conntracks. Fix this by grabbing a reference to the proper reassembled skb. This closes netfilter bugzilla #823. netfilter: ipv6: add getsockopt to retrieve origdst userspace can query the original ipv4 destination address of a REDIRECTed connection via getsockopt(m_sock, SOL_IP, SO_ORIGINAL_DST, &m_server_addr, &addrsize) but for ipv6 no such option existed. This adds getsockopt(..., IPPROTO_IPV6, IP6T_SO_ORIGINAL_DST, ...). Without this, userspace needs to parse /proc or use ctnetlink, which appears to be overkill. This uses option number 80 for IP6T_SO_ORIGINAL_DST, which is spare, to use the same number we use in the IPv4 socket option SO_ORIGINAL_DST. netfilter: nf_conntrack_ipv6: fix tracking of ICMPv6 error messages containing fragments ICMPv6 error messages are tracked by extracting the conntrack tuple of the inner packet and looking up the corresponding conntrack entry. Tuple extraction uses the ->get_l4proto() callback, which in case of fragments returns NEXTHDR_FRAGMENT instead of the upper protocol, even for the first fragment when the entire next header is present, resulting in a failure to find the correct connection tracking entry. This patch changes ipv6_get_l4proto() to use ipv6_skip_exthdr() instead of nf_ct_ipv6_skip_exthdr() in order to skip fragment headers when the fragment offset is zero. netfilter: nf_conntrack_ipv6: improve fragmentation handling The IPv6 conntrack fragmentation currently has a couple of shortcomings. Fragmentes are collected in PREROUTING/OUTPUT, are defragmented, the defragmented packet is then passed to conntrack, the resulting conntrack information is attached to each original fragment and the fragments then continue their way through the stack. Helper invocation occurs in the POSTROUTING hook, at which point only the original fragments are available. The result of this is that fragmented packets are never passed to helpers. This patch improves the situation in the following way: - If a reassembled packet belongs to a connection that has a helper assigned, the reassembled packet is passed through the stack instead of the original fragments. - During defragmentation, the largest received fragment size is stored. On output, the packet is refragmented if required. If the largest received fragment size exceeds the outgoing MTU, a "packet too big" message is generated, thus behaving as if the original fragments were passed through the stack from an outside point of view. - The ipv6_helper() hook function can't receive fragments anymore for connections using a helper, so it is switched to use ipv6_skip_exthdr() instead of the netfilter specific nf_ct_ipv6_skip_exthdr() and the reassembled packets are passed to connection tracking helpers. The result of this is that we can properly track fragmented packets, but still generate ICMPv6 Packet too big messages if we would have before. This patch is also required as a precondition for IPv6 NAT, where NAT helpers might enlarge packets up to a point that they require fragmentation. In that case we can't generate Packet too big messages since the proper MTU can't be calculated in all cases (f.i. when changing textual representation of a variable amount of addresses), so the packet is transparently fragmented iff the original packet or fragments would have fit the outgoing MTU. netfilter: add user-space connection tracking helper infrastructure There are good reasons to supports helpers in user-space instead: * Rapid connection tracking helper development, as developing code in user-space is usually faster. * Reliability: A buggy helper does not crash the kernel. Moreover, we can monitor the helper process and restart it in case of problems. * Security: Avoid complex string matching and mangling in kernel-space running in privileged mode. Going further, we can even think about running user-space helpers as a non-root process. * Extensibility: It allows the development of very specific helpers (most likely non-standard proprietary protocols) that are very likely not to be accepted for mainline inclusion in the form of kernel-space connection tracking helpers. This patch adds the infrastructure to allow the implementation of user-space conntrack helpers by means of the new nfnetlink subsystem `nfnetlink_cthelper' and the existing queueing infrastructure (nfnetlink_queue). I had to add the new hook NF_IP6_PRI_CONNTRACK_HELPER to register ipv[4|6]_helper which results from splitting ipv[4|6]_confirm into two pieces. This change is required not to break NAT sequence adjustment and conntrack confirmation for traffic that is enqueued to our user-space conntrack helpers. Basic operation, in a few steps: 1) Register user-space helper by means of `nfct': nfct helper add ftp inet tcp [ It must be a valid existing helper supported by conntrack-tools ] 2) Add rules to enable the FTP user-space helper which is used to track traffic going to TCP port 21. For locally generated packets: iptables -I OUTPUT -t raw -p tcp --dport 21 -j CT --helper ftp For non-locally generated packets: iptables -I PREROUTING -t raw -p tcp --dport 21 -j CT --helper ftp 3) Run the test conntrackd in helper mode (see example files under doc/helper/conntrackd.conf conntrackd 4) Generate FTP traffic going, if everything is OK, then conntrackd should create expectations (you can check that with `conntrack': conntrack -E expect [NEW] 301 proto=6 src=192.168.1.136 dst=130.89.148.12 sport=0 dport=54037 mask-src=255.255.255.255 mask-dst=255.255.255.255 sport=0 dport=65535 master-src=192.168.1.136 master-dst=130.89.148.12 sport=57127 dport=21 class=0 helper=ftp [DESTROY] 301 proto=6 src=192.168.1.136 dst=130.89.148.12 sport=0 dport=54037 mask-src=255.255.255.255 mask-dst=255.255.255.255 sport=0 dport=65535 master-src=192.168.1.136 master-dst=130.89.148.12 sport=57127 dport=21 class=0 helper=ftp This confirms that our test helper is receiving packets including the conntrack information, and adding expectations in kernel-space. The user-space helper can also store its private tracking information in the conntrack structure in the kernel via the CTA_HELP_INFO. The kernel will consider this a binary blob whose layout is unknown. This information will be included in the information that is transfered to user-space via glue code that integrates nfnetlink_queue and ctnetlink. netfilter: fix crashes in bridge netfilter caused by fragment jumps When fragments from bridge netfilter are passed to IPv4 or IPv6 conntrack and a reassembly queue with the same fragment key already exists from reassembling a similar packet received on a different device (f.i. with multicasted fragments), the reassembled packet might continue on a different codepath than where the head fragment originated. This can cause crashes in bridge netfilter when a fragment received on a non-bridge device (and thus with skb->nf_bridge == NULL) continues through the bridge netfilter code. Add a new reassembly identifier for packets originating from bridge netfilter and use it to put those packets in insolated queues. ipv6: reassembly: use seperate reassembly queues for conntrack and local delivery Currently the same reassembly queue might be used for packets reassembled by conntrack in different positions in the stack (PREROUTING/LOCAL_OUT), as well as local delivery. This can cause "packet jumps" when the fragment completing a reassembled packet is queued from a different position in the stack than the previous ones. [NETNS][FRAGS]: Move ctl tables around. This is a preparation for sysctl netns-ization. Move the ctl tables to the files, where the tuning variables reside. sysctl: remove broken netfilter binary sysctls No one has bothered to set strategy routine for the the netfilter sysctls that return jiffies to be sysctl_jiffies. In most places this can be fixed by proper use of RCU (they do already check for != NULL, but in a racy way), additionally nf_conntrack_expect_related needs to bail out when no helper is present. [NETFILTER]: nf_conntrack_ipv6: fix incorrect classification of IPv6 fragments as ESTABLISHED The individual fragments of a packet reassembled by conntrack have the conntrack reference from the reassembled packet attached, but nfctinfo is not copied. This leaves it initialized to 0, which unfortunately is the value of IP_CT_ESTABLISHED. The result is that all IPv6 fragments are tracked as ESTABLISHED, allowing them to bypass a usual ruleset which accepts ESTABLISHED packets early. [NETFILTER] nf_conntrack: clean up to reduce size of 'struct nf_conn' This patch moves all helper related data fields of 'struct nf_conn' into a separate structure 'struct nf_conn_help'. This new structure is only present in conntrack entries for which we actually have a helper loaded. Also, this patch cleans up the nf_conntrack 'features' mechanism to resemble what the original idea was: Just glue the feature-specific data structures at the end of 'struct nf_conn', and explicitly re-calculate the pointer to it when needed rather than keeping pointers around. Saves 20 bytes per conntrack on my x86_64 box. A non-helped conntrack is 276 bytes. We still need to save another 20 bytes in order to fit into to target of 256bytes. [NETFILTER]: Add nf_conntrack subsystem. The existing connection tracking subsystem in netfilter can only handle ipv4. There were basically two choices present to add connection tracking support for ipv6. We could either duplicate all of the ipv4 connection tracking code into an ipv6 counterpart, or (the choice taken by these patches) we could design a generic layer that could handle both ipv4 and ipv6 and thus requiring only one sub-protocol (TCP, UDP, etc.) connection tracking helper module to be written. In fact nf_conntrack is capable of working with any layer 3 protocol. The existing ipv4 specific conntrack code could also not deal with the pecularities of doing connection tracking on ipv6, which is also cured here. For example, these issues include: 1) ICMPv6 handling, which is used for neighbour discovery in ipv6 thus some messages such as these should not participate in connection tracking since effectively they are like ARP messages 2) fragmentation must be handled differently in ipv6, because the simplistic "defrag, connection track and NAT, refrag" (which the existing ipv4 connection tracking does) approach simply isn't feasible in ipv6 3) ipv6 extension header parsing must occur at the correct spots before and after connection tracking decisions, and there were no provisions for this in the existing connection tracking design 4) ipv6 has no need for stateful NAT The ipv4 specific conntrack layer is kept around, until all of the ipv4 specific conntrack helpers are ported over to nf_conntrack and it is feature complete. Once that occurs, the old conntrack stuff will get placed into the feature-removal-schedule and we will fully kill it off 6 months later.
