usb: gadget: rename usb_gadget_driver::speed to max_speed This commit renames the “speed” field of the usb_gadget_driver structure to “max_speed”. This is so that to make it more apparent that the field represents the maximum speed gadget driver can support. This also make the field look more like fields with the same name in usb_gadget and usb_composite_driver structures. All of those represent the *maximal* speed given entity supports. After this commit, there are the following fields in various structures: * usb_gadget::speed - the current connection speed, * usb_gadget::max_speed - maximal speed UDC supports, * usb_gadget_driver::max_speed - maximal speed gadget driver supports, and * usb_composite_driver::max_speed - maximal speed composite gadget supports. usb: gadget: mass_storage: support multi-luns with different logic block size With Peiyu's patch "gadget: mass_storage: adapt logic block size to bound block devices" (http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg50791.html), now mass storage can adjust logic block size dynamically based on real devices. Then there is one issue caused by it, if two luns have different logic block size, mass storage can't work. Let's check the current software flow: 1. get_next_command(): call received_cbw(); 2. received_cbw(): update common->lun = cbw->Lun, but common->curlen is not updated; 3. do_scsi_command(): in READ_X and WRITE_X commands, common->data_size_from_cmnd is updated by common->curlun->blkbits; 4. check_command(): update common->curlun according to common->lun As you can see, the step 3 uses wrong common->curlun, then wrong common->curlun->blkbits. If the two luns have same blkbits, there isn't issue. Otherwise, both will fail. This patch moves the common->curlun update to step 1, then make sure step 3 gets right blkbits and data_size_from_cmnd. usb: gadget: storage: fix mass storage gadgets to work with Synopsys UDC The Synopsys USB device controller requires all OUT transfer request lengths to be aligned to max packet size. The mass storage gadgets do not meet this requirement for Super Speed. The gadgets already have a function which performs this alignment for CBW packets, so use it for data packets too. The alternative would be to implement bounce buffers in the DWC3 driver, but that could have a significant impact on performance. This involves a switch statement sometimes wrapped around in ({ ... }) block leading to code repetition. To mitigate this issue, this commit introduces usb_speed_string() function, which returns a human-readable name of provided speed. USB: gadget: storage: remove alignment assumption This patch (as1481) fixes a problem affecting g_file_storage and g_mass_storage when running at SuperSpeed. The two drivers currently assume that the bulk-out maxpacket size can evenly divide the SCSI block size, which is 512 bytes. But SuperSpeed bulk endpoints have a maxpacket size of 1024, so the assumption is no longer true. This patch removes that assumption from the drivers, by getting rid of a small optimization (they try to align VFS reads and writes on page cache boundaries). If a command's starting logical block address is 512 bytes below the end of a page, it's not okay to issue a USB command for just those 512 bytes when the maxpacket size is 1024 -- it would result in either babble (for an OUT transfer) or a short packet (for an IN transfer). Also, for backward compatibility, the test for writes extending beyond the end of the backing storage has to be changed. If the host tries to do this, we should accept the data that fits in the backing storage and ignore the rest. Because the storage's end may not align with a USB packet boundary, this means we may have to accept a USB OUT transfer that extends beyond the end of the storage and then write out only the part of the data that fits. usb: gadget: storage: adapt logic block size to bound block devices Now the mass storage driver has fixed logic block size of 512 bytes. The mass storage gadget read/write bound devices only through VFS, so the bottom level devices actually are just RAW devices to the driver and connected PC. As a RAW, hosts can always format, read and write it right in 512 bytes logic block and don't care about the actual logic block size of devices bound to the gadget. But if we want to share the bound block device partition between target board and PC, in case the logic block size of the bound block device is 4KB, we execute the following steps: 1. connect a board with mass storage gadget to PC(the board has set one partition of on-board block device as file name of the mass storage) 2. PC format the mass storage to VFAT by default logic block size and read/write it 3. disconnect boards from PC 4. target board mount the partition as VFAT Step 4 will fail since kernel on target thinks the logic block size of the bound partition as 4KB. A typical error is "FAT: logical sector size too small for device (logical sector size = 512)" If we execute opposite steps: 1. format the partition to VFAT on target board and read/write this partition 2. connect the board to Windows PC as usb mass storage gadget, windows will think the disk is not formatted So the conclusion is that only as a gadget, the mass storage driver has no any problem. But being shared VFAT or other filesystem on PC and target board, it will fail. This patch adapts logic block size to bound block devices and fix the issue. Revert "usb: usb_storage: do not align length of request for CBW to maxp size" This reverts commit 806e8f8fcc27e1753947bd9f059ba2316cf8f92a. To quote Alan Stern: The necessity for this patch has been under discussion. It turns out the UDC that Mian has been working on and Felipe's UDC have contradictory requirements. Mian's UDC driver wants a bulk-OUT transfer length to be shorter than the maxpacket size if a short packet is expected, whereas Felipe's UDC hardware always needs bulk-OUT transfer lengths to be evenly divisible by the maxpacket size. Mian has agreed to go back over the driver to resolve this conflict. This means we probably will not want this patch after all. (In fact, we may ultimately decide to change the gadget framework to require that bulk-OUT transfer lengths _always_ be divisible by the maxpacket size -- only the g_file_storage and g_mass_storage gadgets would need to be changed.) First of all, when device_register() fails the device still needs to be put. However, because lun_release() decreases fsg->ref reference counter the counter must be incremented beforehand. Second of all, after any of the device_create_file()s fails, device_unregister() is called which in turn (indirectly) calls lun_release() which decrements fsg->ref. So, again, the reference counter must be incremented beforehand. Lastly, if the first or the second device_create_file() succeeds, the files are never removed. To fix it, device_remove_file() needs to be called. This is done by simply marking LUN as registered prior to creating files so that fsg_unbind() can handle removing files. USB: gadget: storage: optional SCSI WRITE FUA bit MS Windows mounts removable storage in "Removal optimized mode" by default. All the writes to the media are synchronous which is achieved by setting FUA (Force Unit Access) bit in SCSI WRITE(10,12) commands. vfs: Implement proper O_SYNC semantics While Linux provided an O_SYNC flag basically since day 1, it took until Linux 2.4.0-test12pre2 to actually get it implemented for filesystems, since that day we had generic_osync_around with only minor changes and the great "For now, when the user asks for O_SYNC, we'll actually give O_DSYNC" comment. This patch intends to actually give us real O_SYNC semantics in addition to the O_DSYNC semantics. After Jan's O_SYNC patches which are required before this patch it's actually surprisingly simple, we just need to figure out when to set the datasync flag to vfs_fsync_range and when not. This patch renames the existing O_SYNC flag to O_DSYNC while keeping it's numerical value to keep binary compatibility, and adds a new real O_SYNC flag. To guarantee backwards compatiblity it is defined as expanding to both the O_DSYNC and the new additional binary flag (__O_SYNC) to make sure we are backwards-compatible when compiled against the new headers. This also means that all places that don't care about the differences can just check O_DSYNC and get the right behaviour for O_SYNC, too - only places that actuall care need to check __O_SYNC in addition. Drivers and network filesystems have been updated in a fail safe way to always do the full sync magic if O_DSYNC is set. The few places setting O_SYNC for lower layers are kept that way for now to stay failsafe. We enforce that O_DSYNC is set when __O_SYNC is set early in the open path to make sure we always get these sane options. Note that parisc really screwed up their headers as they already define a O_DSYNC that has always been a no-op. We try to repair it by using it for the new O_DSYNC and redefinining O_SYNC to send both the traditional O_SYNC numerical value _and_ the O_DSYNC one. add a vfs_fsync helper Fsync currently has a fdatawrite/fdatawait pair around the method call, and a mutex_lock/unlock of the inode mutex. All callers of fsync have to duplicate this, but we have a few and most of them don't quite get it right. This patch adds a new vfs_fsync that takes care of this. It's a little more complicated as usual as ->fsync might get a NULL file pointer and just a dentry from nfsd, but otherwise gets afile and we want to take the mapping and file operations from it when it is there. Notes on the fsync callers: - ecryptfs wasn't calling filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait on the lower file - coda wasn't calling filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait on the host file, and returning 0 when ->fsync was missing - shm wasn't calling either filemap_fdatawrite / filemap_fdatawait nor taking i_mutex. Now given that shared memory doesn't have disk backing not doing anything in fsync seems fine and I left it out of the vfs_fsync conversion for now, but in that case we might just not pass it through to the lower file at all but just call the no-op simple_sync_file directly. [and now actually export vfs_fsync] Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by default Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't care for the freezing of tasks at all. It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is done in this patch. The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable() function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional) change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to describe the freezing of tasks more accurately. [akpm@linux-foundation.org: build fixes] Signed-off-by: Rafael J. usb gadget stack: remove usb_ep_*_buffer(), part 1 Remove usb_ep_{alloc,free}_buffer() calls, for small dma-coherent buffers. This patch just removes the interface and its users; later patches will remove controller driver support. - This interface is invariably not implemented correctly in the controller drivers (e.g. using dma pools, a mechanism which post-dates the interface by several years). - At this point no gadget driver really *needs* to use it. In current kernels, any driver that needs such a mechanism could allocate a dma pool themselves. Removing this interface is thus a simplification and improvement. Note that the gmidi.c driver had a bug in this area; fixed. Signed-off-by: David Brownell <dbrownell@users.sourceforge.net> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

Such code dates back to early versions of the first implementation of the gadget API, and has never been triggered. [PATCH] USB: gadget section fixups Recent section changes broke gadget builds on some platforms. This patch is the best fix that's available until better section markings exist: - There's a lot of cleanup code that gets used in both init and exit paths; stop marking it as "__exit". (Best fix for this would be an "__init_or_exit" section marking, putting the cleanup in __init when __exit sections get discarded else in __exit.) - Stop marking the use-once probe routines as "__init" since references to those routines are not allowed from driver structures. They're now marked "__devinit", which in practice is a net lose. (Best fix for this is likely to separate such use-once probe routines from the driver structure ... but in general, all busses that aren't hotpluggable will be forced to waste memory for all probe-only code.) In general these broken section rules waste an average of two to four kBytes per driver of code bloat ... because none of the relevant code can ever be reused after module initialization. [PATCH] Kill PF_SYNCWRITE flag A process flag to indicate whether we are doing sync io is incredibly ugly. It also causes performance problems when one does a lot of async io and then proceeds to sync it. Part of the io will go out as async, and the other part as sync. This causes a disconnect between the previously submitted io and the synced io. For io schedulers such as CFQ, this will cause us lost merges and suboptimal behaviour in scheduling. Remove PF_SYNCWRITE completely from the fsync/msync paths, and let the O_DIRECT path just directly indicate that the writes are sync by using WRITE_SYNC instead. [PATCH] USB: g_file_storage: Set short_not_ok for bulk-out transfers I'm told that some UDC hardware may work better if it knows that receiving a short packet should always cause an error. Accordingly, this patch (as663) sets the short_not_ok flag for bulk-out transfers in g_file_storage. Oddly enough, there are no circumstances where that driver can legally receive a shorter-than-expected bulk-out packet. [PATCH] USB: gadget driver section fixups This adds __init section annotations to gadget driver bind() routines to remove calls from .text into .init sections (for endpoint autoconfig). Likewise it adds __exit section annotations to their unbind() routines. The specification of the gadget driver register/unregister functions is updated to explicitly allow use of those sections. [PATCH] mutex subsystem, semaphore to mutex: VFS, ->i_sem This patch converts the inode semaphore to a mutex. I have tested it on XFS and compiled as much as one can consider on an ia64. [PATCH] USB Gadget: file_storage: remove "volatile" declarations This patch (as612) removes the "volatile" declarations from the file-storage gadget. It turns out that they aren't needed for anything much; adding a few memory barriers does a sufficient job. The patch also removes a wait_queue. Not much point having a queue when only one task is ever going to be on it! Signed-off-by: Alan Stern <stern@rowland.harvard.edu> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

[PATCH] USB: file-storage gadget: Add reference count for children This patch (as601) adds a proper reference count to the file-storage gadget's main data structure, to keep track of references held by child devices (LUNs in this case). Before this, the driver would wait for each child to be released before unbinding. While there's nothing really wrong with that (you can't create a hang by doing "rmmod g_file_storage </sys/.../lun0/ro" since the open file will prevent rmmod from running), the code might as well follow the standard procedures. Besides, this shrinks the size of the structure by a few words... :-) Signed-off-by: Alan Stern <stern@rowland.harvard.edu> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

[PATCH] g_file_storage: fix obscure race condition This patch (as575) fixes an unlikely race in the g_file_storage driver. [PATCH] USB: File-Storage gadget: use the kthread API This patch (as566) converts the File-Storage gadget over to the kthread API. [PATCH] USB: Gadget library: centralize gadget controller numbers This patch centralizes the assignment of bcdDevice numbers for different gadget controllers. This won't improve the object code at all, but it does save a lot of repetitive and error-prone source code ... and will simplify the work of supporting a new controller driver, since most new gadget drivers will no longer need patches (unless some hardware quirks limit USB protocol messaging). Added minor cleanups and identifer hooks for the UDC in the Freescale iMX series processors. [PATCH] Cleanup patch for process freezing 1. Establish a simple API for process freezing defined in linux/include/sched.h: frozen(process) Check for frozen process freezing(process) Check if a process is being frozen freeze(process) Tell a process to freeze (go to refrigerator) thaw_process(process) Restart process frozen_process(process) Process is frozen now 2. Remove all references to PF_FREEZE and PF_FROZEN from all kernel sources except sched.h 3. Fix numerous locations where try_to_freeze is manually done by a driver 4. Remove the argument that is no longer necessary from two function calls. 5. Some whitespace cleanup 6. Clear potential race in refrigerator (provides an open window of PF_FREEZE cleared before setting PF_FROZEN, recalc_sigpending does not check PF_FROZEN). This patch does not address the problem of freeze_processes() violating the rule that a task may only modify its own flags by setting PF_FREEZE. This is not clean in an SMP environment. freeze(process) is therefore not SMP safe! Signed-off-by: Christoph Lameter <christoph@lameter.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
