ipv4: arp: update neighbour address when a gratuitous arp is received and arp_accept is set Gratuitous arp packets are useful in switchover scenarios to update client arp tables as quickly as possible. Currently, the mac address of a neighbour is only updated after a locktime period has elapsed since the last update. In most use cases such delays are unacceptable for network admins. Moreover, the "updated" field of the neighbour stucture doesn't record the last time the address of a neighbour changed but records any change that happens to the neighbour. This is clearly a bug since locktime uses that field as meaning "addr_updated". With this observation, I was able to perpetuate a stale address by sending a stream of gratuitous arp packets spaced less than locktime apart. With this change the address is updated when a gratuitous arp is received and the arp_accept sysctl is set. ipv4: fix wildcard search with inet_confirm_addr() Help of this function says: "in_dev: only on this interface, 0=any interface", but since commit 39a6d0630012 ("[NETNS]: Process inet_confirm_addr in the correct namespace."), the code supposes that it will never be NULL. This function is never called with in_dev == NULL, but it's exported and may be used by an external module. Because this patch restore the ability to call inet_confirm_addr() with in_dev == NULL, I partially revert the above commit, as suggested by Julian. firewire net, ipv4 arp: Extend hardware address and remove driver-level packet inspection. Inspection of upper layer protocol is considered harmful, especially if it is about ARP or other stateful upper layer protocol; driver cannot (and should not) have full state of them. IPv4 over Firewire module used to inspect ARP (both in sending path and in receiving path), and record peer's GUID, max packet size, max speed and fifo address. This patch removes such inspection by extending our "hardware address" definition to include other information as well: max packet size, max speed and fifo. By doing this, The neighbour module in networking subsystem can cache them. Note: As we have started ignoring sspd and max_rec in ARP/NDP, those information will not be used in the driver when sending. When a packet is being sent, the IP layer fills our pseudo header with the extended "hardware address", including GUID and fifo. The driver can look-up node-id (the real but rather volatile low-level address) by GUID, and then the module can send the packet to the wire using parameters provided in the extendedn hardware address. This approach is realistic because IP over IEEE1394 (RFC2734) and IPv6 over IEEE1394 (RFC3146) share same "hardware address" format in their address resolution protocols. Here, extended "hardware address" is defined as follows: union fwnet_hwaddr { u8 u[16]; struct { __be64 uniq_id; /* EUI-64 */ u8 max_rec; /* max packet size */ u8 sspd; /* max speed */ __be16 fifo_hi; /* hi 16bits of FIFO addr */ __be32 fifo_lo; /* lo 32bits of FIFO addr */ } __packed uc; }; Note that Hardware address is declared as union, so that we can map full IP address into this, when implementing MCAP (Multicast Cannel Allocation Protocol) for IPv6, but IP and ARP subsystem do not need to know this format in detail. One difference between original ARP (RFC826) and 1394 ARP (RFC2734) is that 1394 ARP Request/Reply do not contain the target hardware address field (aka ar$tha). This difference is handled in the ARP subsystem. CC: Stephan Gatzka <stephan.gatzka@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: YOSHIFUJI Hideaki <yoshfuji@linux-ipv6.org> Signed-off-by: David S. ipv4: tcp: dont cache unconfirmed intput dst DDOS synflood attacks hit badly IP route cache. On typical machines, this cache is allowed to hold up to 8 Millions dst entries, 256 bytes for each, for a total of 2GB of memory. rt_garbage_collect() triggers and tries to cleanup things. Eventually route cache is disabled but machine is under fire and might OOM and crash. This patch exploits the new TCP early demux, to set a nocache boolean in case incoming TCP frame is for a not yet ESTABLISHED or TIMEWAIT socket. This 'nocache' boolean is then used in case dst entry is not found in route cache, to create an unhashed dst entry (DST_NOCACHE) SYN-cookie-ACK sent use a similar mechanism (ipv4: tcp: dont cache output dst for syncookies), so after this patch, a machine is able to absorb a DDOS synflood attack without polluting its IP route cache. ipv4: Add interface option to enable routing of 127.0.0.0/8 Routing of 127/8 is tradtionally forbidden, we consider packets from that address block martian when routing and do not process corresponding ARP requests. This is a sane default but renders a huge address space practically unuseable. The RFC states that no address within the 127/8 block should ever appear on any network anywhere but it does not forbid the use of such addresses outside of the loopback device in particular. For example to address a pool of virtual guests behind a load balancer. This patch adds a new interface option 'route_localnet' enabling routing of the 127/8 address block and processing of ARP requests on a specific interface. Note that for the feature to work, the default local route covering 127/8 dev lo needs to be removed. Example: $ sysctl -w net.ipv4.conf.eth0.route_localnet=1 $ ip route del 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo table local $ ip addr add 127.1.0.1/16 dev eth0 $ ip route flush cache V2: Fix invalid check to auto flush cache (thanks davem) Signed-off-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Acked-by: Neil Horman <nhorman@tuxdriver.com> Signed-off-by: David S. net: delete all instances of special processing for token ring We are going to delete the Token ring support. This removes any special processing in the core networking for token ring, (aside from net/tr.c itself), leaving the drivers and remaining tokenring support present but inert. The mass removal of the drivers and net/tr.c will be in a separate commit, so that the history of these files that we still care about won't have the giant deletion tied into their history. arp: allow arp processing to honor per interface arp_accept sysctl I found recently that the arp_process function which handles all of our received arp frames, is using IPV4_DEVCONF_ALL macro to check the state of the arp_process flag. This seems wrong, as it implies that either none or all of the network interfaces accept gratuitous arps. This patch corrects that, allowing per-interface arp_accept configuration to deviate from the all setting. Note this also brings us into line with the way the arp_filter setting is handled during arp_process execution. Tested this myself on my home network, and confirmed it works as expected. net: Don't proxy arp respond if iif == rt->dst.dev if private VLAN is disabled Commit 653241 (net: RFC3069, private VLAN proxy arp support) changed the behavior of arp proxy to send arp replies back out on the interface the request came in even if the private VLAN feature is disabled. Previously we checked rt->dst.dev != skb->dev for in scenarios, when proxy arp is enabled on for the netdevice and also when individual proxy neighbour entries have been added. ipv4: Remove all uses of LL_ALLOCATED_SPACE ipv4: Remove all uses of LL_ALLOCATED_SPACE The macro LL_ALLOCATED_SPACE was ill-conceived. It applies the alignment to the sum of needed_headroom and needed_tailroom. As the amount that is then reserved for head room is needed_headroom with alignment, this means that the tail room left may be too small. This patch replaces all uses of LL_ALLOCATED_SPACE in net/ipv4 with the macro LL_RESERVED_SPACE and direct reference to needed_tailroom. net: gre: provide multicast mappings for ipv4 and ipv6 My commit 6d55cb91a0020ac0 (gre: fix hard header destination address checking) broke multicast. The reason is that ip_gre used to get ipgre_header() calls with zero destination if we have NOARP or multicast destination. Instead the actual target was decided at ipgre_tunnel_xmit() time based on per-protocol dissection. Instead of allowing the "abuse" of ->header() calls with invalid destination, this creates multicast mappings for ip_gre. This also fixes "ip neigh show nud noarp" to display the proper multicast mappings used by the gre device. arp: allow to invalidate specific ARP entries IPv4 over firewire needs to be able to remove ARP entries from the ARP cache that belong to nodes that are removed, because IPv4 over firewire uses ARP packets for private information about nodes. This information becomes invalid as soon as node drops off the bus and when it reconnects, its only possible to start talking to it after it responded to an ARP packet. But ARP cache prevents such packets from being sent. Signed-off-by: Maxim Levitsky <maximlevitsky@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

Thanks [PATCH net-next] net neigh: RCU conversion of neigh hash table Instead of storing hash_buckets, hash_mask and hash_rnd in "struct neigh_table", a new structure is defined : struct neigh_hash_table { struct neighbour **hash_buckets; unsigned int hash_mask; __u32 hash_rnd; struct rcu_head rcu; }; And "struct neigh_table" has an RCU protected pointer to such a neigh_hash_table. include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. ipv4: allow warming up the ARP cache with request type gratuitous ARP If the per device ARP_ACCEPT option is enable, currently we only allow creating new ARP cache entries for response type gratuitous ARP. Allowing gratuitous ARP to create new ARP entries (not only to update existing ones) is useful when we want to avoid unnecessary delays for the first packet of a stream. This patch allows request type gratuitous ARP to create new ARP cache entries as well. This is useful when we want to populate the ARP cache entries for a large number of hosts on the same LAN. net: RFC3069, private VLAN proxy arp support This is to be used together with switch technologies, like RFC3069, that where the individual ports are not allowed to communicate with each other, but they are allowed to talk to the upstream router. As described in RFC 3069, it is possible to allow these hosts to communicate through the upstream router by proxy_arp'ing. This patch basically allow proxy arp replies back to the same interface (from which the ARP request/solicitation was received). Tunable per device via proc "proxy_arp_pvlan": /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/*/proxy_arp_pvlan This switch technology is known by different vendor names: - In RFC 3069 it is called VLAN Aggregation. - Cisco and Allied Telesyn call it Private VLAN. - Hewlett-Packard call it Source-Port filtering or port-isolation. - Ericsson call it MAC-Forced Forwarding (RFC Draft). Revert "ipv4: arp announce, arp_proxy and windows ip conflict verification" This reverts commit 73ce7b01b4496a5fbf9caf63033c874be692333f. After discovering that we don't listen to gratuitious arps in 2.6.30 I tracked the failure down to this commit. The patch makes absolutely no sense. RFC2131 RFC3927 and RFC5227. are all in agreement that an arp request with sip == 0 should be used for the probe (to prevent learning) and an arp request with sip == tip should be used for the gratitous announcement that people can learn from. It appears the author of the broken patch got those two cases confused and modified the code to drop all gratuitous arp traffic. Ouch! Cc: stable@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Eric W. ipv4: arp announce, arp_proxy and windows ip conflict verification Windows (XP at least) hosts on boot, with configured static ip, performing address conflict detection, which is defined in RFC3927. Here is quote of important information: " An ARP announcement is identical to the ARP Probe described above, except that now the sender and target IP addresses are both set to the host's newly selected IPv4 address. " But it same time this goes wrong with RFC5227. " The 'sender IP address' field MUST be set to all zeroes; this is to avoid polluting ARP caches in other hosts on the same link in the case where the address turns out to be already in use by another host. " When ARP proxy configured, it must not answer to both cases, because it is address conflict verification in any case. For Windows it is just causing to detect false "ip conflict". Already there is code for RFC5227, so just trivially we just check also if source ip == target ip. Signed-off-by: Denys Fedoryshchenko <denys@visp.net.lb> Signed-off-by: David S. [NDISC]: Fix race in generic address resolution Frank Blaschka provided the bug report and the initial suggested fix for this bug. He also validated this version of this fix. The problem is that the access to neigh->arp_queue is inconsistent, we grab references when dropping the lock lock to call neigh->ops->solicit() but this does not prevent other threads of control from trying to send out that packet at the same time causing corruptions because both code paths believe they have exclusive access to the skb. The best option seems to be to hold the write lock on neigh->lock during the ->solicit() call. I looked at all of the ndisc_ops implementations and this seems workable. The only case that needs special care is the IPV4 ARP implementation of arp_solicit(). It wants to take neigh->lock as a reader to protect the header entry in neigh->ha during the emission of the soliciation. We can simply remove the read lock calls to take care of that since holding the lock as a writer at the caller providers a superset of the protection afforded by the existing read locking. The rest of the ->solicit() implementations don't care whether the neigh is locked or not. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

[NETNS]: Modify the neighbour table code so it handles multiple network namespaces I'm actually surprised at how much was involved. At first glance it appears that the neighbour table data structures are already split by network device so all that should be needed is to modify the user interface commands to filter the set of neighbours by the network namespace of their devices. However a couple things turned up while I was reading through the code. The proxy neighbour table allows entries with no network device, and the neighbour parms are per network device (except for the defaults) so they now need a per network namespace default. So I updated the two structures (which surprised me) with their very own network namespace parameter. Updated the relevant lookup and destroy routines with a network namespace parameter and modified the code that interacts with users to filter out neighbour table entries for devices of other namespaces. I'm a little concerned that we can modify and display the global table configuration and from all network namespaces. But this appears good enough for now. I keep thinking modifying the neighbour table to have per network namespace instances of each table type would should be cleaner. The hash table is already dynamically sized so there are it is not a limiter. The default parameter would be straight forward to take care of. However when I look at the how the network table is built and used I still find some assumptions that there is only a single neighbour table for each type of table in the kernel. The netlink operations, neigh_seq_start, the non-core network users that call neigh_lookup. So while it might be doable it would require more refactoring than my current approach of just doing a little extra filtering in the code. Signed-off-by: Eric W. IPoIB: improve IPv4/IPv6 to IB mcast mapping functions An IPoIB subnet on an IB fabric that spans multiple IB subnets can't use link-local scope in multicast GIDs. The existing routines that map IP/IPv6 multicast addresses into IB link-level addresses hard-code the scope to link-local, and they also leave the partition key field uninitialised. This patch adds a parameter (the link-level broadcast address) to the mapping routines, allowing them to initialise both the scope and the P_Key appropriately, and fixes up the call sites. The next step will be to add a way to configure the scope for an IPoIB interface. Signed-off-by: Rolf Manderscheid <rvm@obsidianresearch.com> Signed-off-by: Roland Dreier <rolandd@cisco.com>

[NET]: Make the device list and device lookups per namespace. This patch makes most of the generic device layer network namespace safe. This patch makes dev_base_head a network namespace variable, and then it picks up a few associated variables. The functions: dev_getbyhwaddr dev_getfirsthwbytype dev_get_by_flags dev_get_by_name __dev_get_by_name dev_get_by_index __dev_get_by_index dev_ioctl dev_ethtool dev_load wireless_process_ioctl were modified to take a network namespace argument, and deal with it. vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their hooks will receive a network namespace argument. So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces. For now the ifindex generator is left global. Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else we will have corner case problems with migration when we get that far. At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when you change namespaces, and the like. Signed-off-by: Eric W. [NET]: Make device event notification network namespace safe Every user of the network device notifiers is either a protocol stack or a pseudo device. If a protocol stack that does not have support for multiple network namespaces receives an event for a device that is not in the initial network namespace it quite possibly can get confused and do the wrong thing. To avoid problems until all of the protocol stacks are converted this patch modifies all netdev event handlers to ignore events on devices that are not in the initial network namespace. As the rest of the code is made network namespace aware these checks can be removed. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

[NET]: Make /proc/net per network namespace This patch makes /proc/net per network namespace. It modifies the global variables proc_net and proc_net_stat to be per network namespace. The proc_net file helpers are modified to take a network namespace argument, and all of their callers are fixed to pass &init_net for that argument. This ensures that all of the /proc/net files are only visible and usable in the initial network namespace until the code behind them has been updated to be handle multiple network namespaces. Making /proc/net per namespace is necessary as at least some files in /proc/net depend upon the set of network devices which is per network namespace, and even more files in /proc/net have contents that are relevant to a single network namespace. [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.h After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). Sorry, no exact revison and no more debugging > yet since it'a a production gateway. The breakage is caused by the change to use the CB area for flagging whether a packet has been queued due to proxy_delay. This area gets cleared every time arp_rcv gets called. Unfortunately packets delayed due to proxy_delay also go through arp_rcv when they are reprocessed. In fact, I can't think of a reason why delayed proxy packets should go through netfilter again at all. So the easiest solution is to bypass that and go straight to arp_process. This is essentially what would've happened before netfilter support was added to ARP. Signed-off-by: Herbert Xu <herbert@gondor.apana.org.au> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

[NET]: Kill skb->real_dev Bonding just wants the device before the skb_bond() decapsulation occurs, so simply pass that original device into packet_type->func() as an argument. It remains to be seen whether we can use this same exact thing to get rid of skb->input_dev as well. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
